Description:
Systematically manage the Crown forest estate and its renewable resources with the aim of ensuring stability in the wood based industries while maintaining acceptable standards of forest enviromental values. The functions of the Conservator of Forests, previously an offical in the Lands and Surveys Department became the responsibility of a new Department when the Forestry Act 1920 was proclaimed on 1 January 1921. The Conservator of Forests was the permanent head of the new Department until 1947. A Royal Commission was appointed in 1945 to enquire into the administration of the Forestry Department and as a result the Forestry Act was amended in 1946. The amendments abolished the position of Conservator of Forests and created a 3 member Forestry Commission to manage the Department (later increased to 4 members). Despite some confusion in the minds of both the public and the staff of the Department, the Commission consists of the Cheif and Assistant Commissioners only. The Department continues to exists and operate. The only change has occurred as a result of the re-organisation of the State Service in 1990. To match the style of departmental titling across the Service, the Forestry Department became the Department of Forestry on 1 July 1990. The Government intended to merge the Forestry and Mines Departments with the Tasmanian Development Authority to create a Department of State Resources and Development on 3 February 1993 but encountered technical legal problems. A task force was established to address these problems. In the meantime the affected part of SR1993 No. 6 was revoked by SR1993 No. 33. From 1 July 1994 the Forestry Act was amended to make the Department a Corporation (and its Private Forests Division became a separate corporation under its own Board).
