Description:
The name of the Police Department was changed, on the 17 Jul 1989, to reflect the increasing importance of the State Emergency Service it administered. The change also paved the way for the amalgamation of the Fire and Ambulance Services with the new Department on 1 July 1990. On 18 February 1992, following the change of government, the Tasmanian Ambulance Service was transferred to the control of the Department of Health. On 25 March the Fire Service was re-established as an agency in its own right and Emergency Services was dropped from the name of the Department.~
