Description:
Design and supervise Government buildings. Advise the Government on capital works and the building industry. On 17 July 1989, as part of a general reorganisation of the State Service, the Operations Branch of the Department of Main Roads and the Development Division of the Housing Department were amalgamated with the Department of Construction. On 18 February 1992, following a change of Government, the Local Government Office was transferred from the Department of Environment and Planning. The new Minister assumed control of racing and gaming and the Tasmanian Racing Authority (formerly part of the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation) and the Gaming Commission (formerly part of the Department of Treasury and Finance) came under the administrative control of the Department of Construction. On 3 February1993, as an interim measure whilst the management of racing and gaming were reviewed, the Gaming Commission was transferred back to the Department of Treasury and Finance.

Architects Act 1929, Builder's Loans Act 1950, Housing and Construction Act (Repeal) Act 1983, Public Works Construction Act 1880, Roads and Jetties Act 1935 (in so far as it relates to the provision of plant and stores and the operation of the Road Construction Plant Suspense Account and the procurement and use of resources for constructing and maintaining State highways, subsidiary roads, country roads, public works, bridges and marine facilities). Additional legislation, committed to this Department between 1992 and 1993, was administered by the Tasmanian Racing Authority and the Gaming Commission.
