Description:
The District was created by amalgamating the Devon and Meercroft Districts (which had been separated in 1949). At the same time the Devon and Meercroft Hospitals and the Devonport Medical Centre were amalgamated to create the Mersey General Hospital. The District was re-constituted by Statutory Rule 1968 Number 82, dated 11 June, which transferred the Deloraine Municipality to the Launceston District. The same instrument transferred the management of the Sheffield District Nursing Centre from the Department of Health Services to the Board. A further process of amalgamation was effected by Statutory Rule 1989 Number 1, dated 12 January, by which Mersey became part of the North West Regional Public Hospitals Board.~
