Originally known as Spencer District, by 1951 it had shrunk to the point where it consisted solely of Wynyard municipality and so was re-named on 26 July. A process of reintegrating the Districts of the North West began on 1 december 1965 when Wynyard was amalgamated with Burnie (SR1965/191).~
