Description:
Administer mineral resources and perform scientific research relating to the earth sciences and mineral resources. Encourage mineral development. Create data bases and maps of mineral resources and geology. Assess groundwater resources and advise on landslips, geological hazards and engineering geology. The former Mines Department was amalgamated with the Rivers and Water Supply Department on 17 July 1989 to create the Department of Resources and Energy. Mines continued to operate as an independent division and although preparations were made for integration these plans were abandoned after 2 and a half years and Mines became a Department again on 18 February 1992.
