Issued to accompany an exhibition held at the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, LINC Tasmania, Hobart, from 8 September 2017 to 27 January 2018.

The exhibition, "featuring nineteenth century prints of Tasmania's native birds ... has been inspired by the book 'The Birdman's Wife', written by Melissa Ashley and [which] reveals the fascinating story of the artist behind the prints, Elizabeth Gould. John Gould ('The Birdman'), recorded Australia's bird species in a series of folio volumes called 'The Birds of Australia'. His wife Elizabeth Gould was an accomplished artist and worked alongside her husband to create these beautiful books. Elizabeth's role in the production of Gould's books has been understated and overlooked. She was a skilled lithographer, and completed a large number of prints before her death in 1841. It is clear that she had a major part in the design of 'The Birds of Australia', but she was acknowledged in only 84 of the 600 illustrations."--Libraries Tasmania website.
