History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Isabella Lewis as a young woman, facing front. Isabella Lewis was born in New South Wales in 1798, the daughter of Captain Neil MacKellar of the New South Wales Corps and Sarah Cooley. She arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1816, on the occasion of her marriage to Richard Lewis, an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. Richard Lewis founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons.
Condition:
Condition: Frame has overall minor cracking, losses and a number of accretions. There is no backing protection. The work is loose in the frame. Minor scratching and staining of the gold frame. Minor dirt on the cover glass. Loose debris on the surface of the miniature. The paint layer is flaking in the hair area, the right eye and the right side of the head. Minor planar distortion of the ivory.
