History note:
David Lewis was the eldest of six sons of Richard and Isabella Lewis, and was a merchant in partnership with his father and brother, and a politician. He served as Alderman and Mayor of the city of Hobart, a member of the Executive Council, and served as Treasurer of the colony under Premier Crowther. He served as Director of the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company and Australian Mutual Provident Society. In 1845 he married Lilias Sophia Mackinnon.

A ninth plate daguerrotype of David Lewis, facing front, housed in original union case.
Condition:
Condition: Clasp on case functioning. Velvet is faded. The case front and back are abraded and corners are damaged. Minor scuffing to leather of frame. Union case separated. Glass disease spots. Silver oxidation bottom edge. Dust within case and glass layers.
