History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Richard Lewis, facing front. Richard Lewis was an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. He founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons.
Condition:
Condition: Frame: dirty, losses in compo top centre right, bottom right, bottom centre right, left outer edge; losses in gilt; cracks in corners and all edges. Mount: crack centre left and minor cracks bottom left and bottom right; slight staining. Inner mount: mis-aligned with oval of mount; losses of gilt. Glazing: dirty and minor crystalline deposits. Media: no apparent damage; some marks in red background (possibly brush marks). Support: ivory appears flat. Verso: original backing; information attached in zip-lock bag with pressure-sensitive tape; original inscriptions and fittings; holes in dust paper centre left and centre right (“repaired” with pressure-sensitive tape).
