History note:
A head and shoulders portrait of Isabella Lewis as a young woman, facing front. Isabella Lewis was born in New South Wales in 1798, the daughter of Captain Neil MacKellar of the New South Wales Corps and Sarah Cooley. She arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1816, on the occasion of her marriage to Richard Lewis, an auctioneer and merchant who arrived in Hobart Town in 1815. Richard Lewis founded a commercial and shipping business later known as R. Lewis & Sons.
Condition:
Condition: Support: tension strength slightly slack. Paint: mechanical cracks throughout; minor losses around edges. Surface: semi-gloss varnish; noticeable matt patches in upper left; considerable varnish residues. Slip: painted gold - minor chips in corners and chip bottom right. Frame: good rigidity; minor losses; cracks top right and right across bottom frame member - these cracks coated with a pink-tinged substance; mitres have a white-coloured residue.
