Bookseller Publisher Review
The cover of Sally Rippin's latest book sports a girl in a frilly blue tutu, a white t-shirt with the letter B on it (apparently it stands for ballerina), and on her feet are not dainty ballet slippers but a chunky pair of red boots. Meet Billie B Brown, a tomboyish girl who sports a messy ponytail, freckles and an impish grin. This early reader book is the first of a series staring Billie and her adventures. Here Billie's latest obsession is with ballet and she ropes in best friend Jack, the boy next door, to accompany her to dance classes. Unfortunately Billie soon realises that she can't quite manage to flutter about like a graceful butterfly. After a little bit of lateral thinking, she and Jack come up with a happy solution. With big, easy-to-read text and a scattering of illustrations (by Aki Fukuoka), Sally Rippin's story introduces concepts such as conformity, independence and friendship. It's a simple tale but a heartening read for those with young girls about to embark on the whole fairy-princess-ballerina craze. The Bad Butterfly is particularly good at inverting stereotypes: girls don't necessarily have to wear pink nor be delicate little butterflies to succeed. Thuy On is a Melbourne writer and reviewer
